So question now is, Do I want all the genetic testing done? Here are the options:
Nuchal Translucency (NT) is a specialized ultrasound along with blood withdrawals to evaluate two different proteins. The ultrasound measures the amount of fluid underneath the skin at the back of the fetus' neck. This only screens for Down syndrome and Trisomy 18, not spina bifida or other neural tube defects. You may have additional blood tests at 15-20 weeks to test for the spina bifida et al. However, there is no definite answer with these tests. They just give you a "You have a greater or lesser risk" answer.
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) takes a small amount of tissue from the placenta between 10-13 weeks. This is performed earlier than amniocentesis but does not detect neural tube defects. Samples maybe taken transcervically or transabdominally.
Amniocentesis is performed between 16-20 weeks. A needle is inserted through your belly (boo) into the uterus and a small amt of amniotic fluid is removed. All chromosomal abnormalities can be detected.
Yikes, a lot to think about!!!!!
ALSO, it turns out that my blood type is A- and that puts me at risk of Rh Sensitization if Baby Dadda has a Positive (+) blood type. Quick info, if (BD) is (+) and me (-) then the baby will be (+) and then if our blood mixes (highly likely) I can develop a sensitization to this, basically, An Rh-negative mother will develop antibodies against Rh-positive blood cells (become sensitized) only if fetal blood crosses the placenta and enters her bloodstream. Her immune system then "sees" these cells, identifies them as foreign, and mounts an immune response. (more info here) They can give a fancy drug called Rhogam™ to counter act this. SO, need to find out Baby Dadda blood type STAT!
Other than that, I can only gain 20 lbs because I am obese. Yes, I am according to the BMI. Well, I am border overweight. 2 days ago, I was overweight, today I am obese. Literally only a lb or 2 off.
Went swimming and had PT today. My PT coach is one tough cookie and is mad I won't be here next week. Whatev!
Well, surprise, here is a picture of Mr or Miss Kidney Bean! Oh thought of a new names today, Stella or Olivia, but these boy names are killing me. Please give me ideas!!!!!

I am so glad you are blogging your pregnancy. As much for us as for yourself. Enjoy everyday of it because it will go quickly and you'll miss it - believe it or not. So happy for you, Boo.
ReplyDeleteyay, no twins! I bet it was exciting for you to get to see the baby. My input: don't get the genetic testing. What good does that do? They aren't 100% accurate anyway, so if something comes up postitive, you might be worrying for nothing, because the baby could be just fine. Plus, I think there are dangers with getting an amnio (miscarraige), regardless of what the doc says. I am big on NO INTERVENTION. That's my two cents. Love ya. ;)
